RAY OF LIGHT

After the disappointing sales of the Bedtime Stories album, the successful Evita years and the birth of her daughter Lourdes Maria, Madonna released her seventh studio album. With this album she was inspired by Kabbalah, a Jewish faith movement. The album therefore has thirteen songs, the sacred number in kabbalah, for which the fourteenth song, Has To Be, was deleted. This appeared as a bonus track on the Japanese release.

Due to the religious atmosphere of the album, the lyrics of the songs are less accessible than her previous work. Madonna sings about her daughter in several songs (Mer Girl, Little Star and Nothing really matters).

The lead single from the album was Frozen and reached number 1 internationally on the charts. Her second single, the title track Ray of light, was also an international number 1 hit. The other singles Drowned World/Substitute For Love, The Power of Good-bye and Nothing really matters also achieved great success.

Due to its great success and autobiographical elements, the album is often compared to her Like a Prayer album from 1989.
